In the truth about teen girls journalist Belinda Luscombe wrote an article on time magazine deals with the issue of teen girls their attitude. The author states that girls are being too sexy these days. IN 2008 there were some episodes with teen celebrities Jamie Lynn Spears pregnant and Miley Cyrus seminaked in some photographs. Luscombe pays special attention to the way Girlhood sexiness is absorved by them trough tv shows, films. etc.
Gossip GIrl is mentioned on the article as being part of a number of shows that promote this kind of sexy attitude among young teens. She clearly specifies that girls are interested in sexual content in the media.
I personally disagree with Luscombe because there are many reasons why teenage girls are attracted to the show. Gossip girls sells a dream world to most american and foreing girls. We cant generalize on the subject but we can say that the world that they are invited to is a fantasy land of expensive clothes, limousines, fancy parties, fashion trends and dream vacations. These elements combined with a good story that brings results in tension and finally things work out somehow during the episode. These teens do not seem real to us if we see them at a glance but when we get to know the characters we can see that altough their evryday life is extravagant, they are teens.
The idea of seeing them as teens makes the show stand out and make girls imitate the characters. Serena appears to be a socialite something a lot of girls wish they could become. I believe that teen girls want to be like Serena rich, popular, beautiful. Serena does well in school and she is always in trouble for some reason or another. However we need to establish something clear and that is that these teen characters need to make fans watch the show every week. In a world were people cut words in order to save time and everyone is always in a hurry a tv show cant avoid introducing more drama in every episode. When life is less complicated for them at the show it is less fun for us.
