If we consider the dictionary definition of The pervasive term 'cool' we find that it means 'fashionable' or 'hip'. But the word cool involves a great quantity of other things. Questions can help us define what is cool like for example who writes the scripts that young people follow? Who defines what is “cool?” Who says what is acceptable? In a book I read in high school Brave New World Aldous Huxley described a world where “every one belongs to every one else. That can be our starting point. There might be no universal meaning of what is cool.
We can take fashion as an example to describe the effects that the use of the term cool causes in that particular industry. During the 1980s what was considered cool and a must have is today used for costume at parties. The same happened with the 1960s womens fashion. Talent was the prerequisite to success in the 1960s. For the first time ever in any fashion era, the young became the leaders of fashion. They led with new and radically innovative fashion styles, with little girl woman androgynous looks for women that swept away the sophisticated sweater girls of the early sixties. The picture of Twiggy in the header defines her as the epitome of a sixties baby doll woman and that style is not considered as cool at the moment.
The video clearly shows that what was cool back then is different from other decades. Fashion has changed over the years and every decade we are surprised with a new style. However the best designers in the world go back in time to find inspiration, they bring elements from other decades and mix them to put up a new collection. It is better to find different styles during time because that difference makes fashion history possible.
When it comes to the film industry most celebrities have help from a stylist. They are the responsible ones to make sure that their clients are well dressed everywhere for every event in a appropriate way. Rachel Zoe is a celebrity stylist and she has among her clients Cameron Diaz, Keira Kneightley, Molly Seems and Debra Messing among others. Zoe has to define what is cool and what isn’t. Stylist interpretations are seen everyday on magazines. Fashion stylists spend time to decide what is cool and what isn’t and that is when they make up looks for celebrities and trends are made.
When there are awards like the Golden Globes, MTV awards, The Emmys or The Oscars the nominees and all guests to those events are being photograph and the next day they are analyzed and criticized by a group of what is known as fashion experts. E entertainment Television and TV guide have an hour long post shows dedicated to discuss what each person was wearing. The analysis includes hair, make up, accessories, dress and shoes. What effect does it have?
A group of people that decide what is cool and what isn’t shouldn’t have a great effect on the industry or on celebrities but the effect is huge. The pictures are on the newspaper and magazines as an example you can see the photographs. The dos and don’t list is a classic one that we find the next day after each big Hollywood or New York event.
More than a hundred and fifty media communications representatives are present on awards. Each fashion magazine has a photographer and they have a section dedicated only for the fashion. Most people want to see celebrities styles and copy them.
The fashion industry suffers from the opinion of a few number of people who believe have earned the right to decide what is cool or not. If they decide one dress is cool and a must have then the designer will be blessed but if they consider that a design is awful or not cool enough designers names can be banned from the cool list.
What is cool in fashion terms is redefined every month on magazines, TV and people on the streets that is why the media is the main influence not only to communicate but to judge.
